I have seen home health care go through many changes. Of late, the changes are coming more often and at a faster pace.

I was recently involved in a project at Angmar where we were gathering patient testimonials from all of our offices. Over the course of three evenings of reading these testimonials, one thing became very clear: our employees not only provide care – but they CARE for their patients. So often I read “Your nurses became an extension of our family” or “You really are Angels!”. No matter what changes occur, providing excellent patient care has always been and will continue to be the #1 goal of home health care.

I would love to hear from nurses, therapists and aides that work in the home care industry about how the changes in the system are affecting their work and the care they provide to their patients.

What do you think has been the most significant change in the recent past that has affected your job? Have the changes affected your ability to provide the same quality of care and level of service that you would want your own parents to receive?

Questions to Ask Your Doctor…

The best way to get all of your questions answered during a visit to your doctor is to write a list of everything you want to discuss. Remember – in order for your doctor to decide what is best for you, he or she should have all the information that is available before deciding on a course of action. You, as the patient, should speak up about all your concerns, and ask all the questions you need to in order to be part of the decision making process about what is the best course of action for you!

Some questions you might want to ask would include:

1. What tests can you use to diagnose the problem/condition I have?
2. What is causing my condition?
3. What can I do to make a difference in my health?
4. What are my options for treatment?
5. What are the benefits for each option?
6. Can my symptoms worsen and if yes….
7. What should I expect?
8. (If you receive a new prescription) How will this new medication interact with other medications I am currently on?

Too often we find that individuals don’t report everything they should to their physician as they fear that by saying they fell, or are having other health issues, they may be told they can no longer live independently!

Realizing that home health care can help educate individuals about their condition or disease in order to help that person manage their condition and prevent exacerbations while reducing hospitalizations will actually result in the ability to remain independent in their own home is vital!
